A lot of technology goes into pipeline construction and operation to ensure the safe transport of oil.
One of these safety features is shut-off valves.
Energy East will be equipped with hundreds of these devices. Shut-off valves can be closed remotely from our 24/7 Control Centre in a few minutes, effectively isolating any segment of pipeline where data indicate a possible leak.
“Shut-off valves are placed strategically along the pipeline route to help protect sensitive areas such as large bodies of water,” says Niki, Emergency Management Specialist for Energy East.
“In the event of an emergency, one of our Control Center operators will immediately turn off the pumps that move the oil along the pipeline and remotely close valves. This will stop the flow of oil into that pipeline segment where there is a potential leak,” she adds.
