Geotechnical Program Saint John

Our scientists, engineers and trained field workers study wildlife, fish, soil, vegetation, shallow bedrock, geology and terrain around the project to better understand and minimize its effects on the environment. Geotechnical surveys are seabed analyses that determine existing soil and rock conditions, and help us design a safe marine terminal.


How do we do geotech surveys?

Careful analysis to ensure work will not harm marine species or their habitat.

Field work will be carried out using a geotechnical drill rig on a jack-up barge to safely work above the tides and currents.

The geotech work includes drilling small boreholes into the seabed where the terminal is planned. A protective drilling casing helps reduce noise and minimize sedimentation.

Samples are collected and tested.

Information is used for detailed designs of the foundations, for safe operations during the lifetime of the project.

WHERE IS THE GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAM HAPPENING?
In August 2015, the Energy East team started new surveys in the Bay of Fundy to help us plan the Canaport Energy East marine terminal being proposed on the western shore of Bay of Fundy, southeast of the port in Saint John Harbour, New Brunswick.

IS TRANSCANADA AUTHORIZED TO CONDUCT THIS FIELD STUDY?
Before starting any work, we obtained a letter of authorization from Transport Canada under the Navigable Waters Protection Program as well as a letter of advice from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. No other provincial or federal permits are required, but as we have done throughout our company’s history, we will continue to work with all levels of government and Indigenous communities to determine issues and mitigate activities to move important projects like this one forward.
