What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about oil? Filling up your car at a gas station would probably come first, right?
Do you know that oil is also used to produce critical medical supplies? From heart valves and hearing aids to antiseptics or artificial limbs – all these things are made from petroleum products.
Oil goes into so many of our daily life’s essentials such as computers and mobile phones. And it’s a critical component in so many of the things that keep us safe such as life jackets, motorcycle helmets or children’s car seats.
In fact, all plastic is made from petroleum and plastic is used almost everywhere, including synthetic fabrics for clothing. Asphalt used in road construction is a petroleum product as is the synthetic rubber in the tires. Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, as does fertilizer, herbicides and detergents.
Oil is an essential part of many of the things we use every day. It has helped humanity leap forward, curing diseases, extending life expectancy, and raising the standards of living for many across the world. It drives our global economy and supports the lifestyle that many of us take for granted. Millions upon millions of Canadians depend on oil – directly or indirectly – for their livelihood. You’re probably one of them.
The International Energy Agency recently predicted that global oil needs will increase by another 15 per cent to 104 million barrels per day by 2040. The Paris-based energy watchdog also warned that to ensure a good market supply, more crude oil projects would need to be developed more quickly.
So why are we proposing to build the Energy East pipeline? Because the world still needs oil. Even the strongest anti-oil critics recognize that it’s a long-term conversation. And if we could, somehow, shut oil down today, the results would be disastrous. So it comes down to opening up options, not shutting things down.
For us at Energy East, this means finding the safest way of getting our oil across the country to ensure we have what we need, when we need it. It means delivering the world’s safest, most technologically advanced pipeline that allows us Canadians to benefit from our resources while ensuring we protect the environment and the safety of everyone in our communities.
We’re a Canadian company with more than 60 years of experience building and operating safe and reliable pipelines. Every step of our approach is guided by our commitment to the environment, with special care taken to protect the water and land along our pipeline routes and round-the clock monitoring of our operations.
We will do all this with Energy East too because we realize how much oil means to all of us, and because we are committed to deliver a world-class pipeline that will safely transport our domestic resources and create thousands of jobs in local communities along the way.
